IPCA student selected for internship at CERN

Nuno Fernandes, a student who completed his entire academic career at IPCA, was selected by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), in Switzerland, for a paid internship of 1 year.

Nuno has been an IPCA student since 2017. He started by attending the Higher Professional Technician course in Electronic and Computer Systems, then proceeded to a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and is now finishing the Master in Electronic and Computer Engineering.

Joining the European Organization for Nuclear Research is a dream come true. “Since I took my professional course, I aspired to be able to join CERN one day”, says Nuno Fernandes.

For his candidacy to be successful, the student mentions that “the support that IPCA gives to its students, namely RUN-EU, co-creation and entrepreneurship programs and, of course, the help of the International Relations Office were fundamental” and contributed decisively to this outcome.

At CERN, Nuno Fernandes will be responsible for developing software for measuring and analyzing the magnets that are used in the particle accelerator, from start to finish, to ensure the quality of the components.

What is CERN?

Founded in 1954, the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) laboratory is located on the Franco-Swiss border, near Geneva, and has the largest particle accelerator in the world, called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This powerful accelerator is used to study the building blocks of matter – the fundamental particles.

CERN was one of the first joint ventures in Europe and currently comprises 21 member states, including Portugal.
