General Council

The General Council is the governing body of the Polytechnic of Cávado and Ave. It is responsible for defining the strategy, guiding and supervising the activity of the Institution, promoting the pursuit of its mission as a Higher Education Institution.

The General Council of the Polytechnic of Cávado and Ave is made up of twenty-three members, distributed as follows:

  • Twelve representatives of IPCA teachers and researchers;
  • Three student representatives;
  • Seven external personalities of recognised merit from outside the institution with knowledge and experience relevant to the Institute;
  • One representative of the Institute’s non-teaching and non-research staff.

The term of office of elected or appointed members is four years, except in the case of students, where it is two years, and they may not be removed from office, except by the General Council itself, by a qualified majority of two thirds of the members of the body, in the event of serious misconduct, under the terms of the body’s own regulations.
