CONFIA 2025 kicks off on June 26 at Vila do Conde

The 12th edition of CONFIA — International Conference on Illustration and Animation will take place on June 26 and 27, organized by IPCA in partnership with ID+ – Research Institute for Design, Media and Culture, and hosted at ESMAD – School of Media, Arts and Design, in Vila do Conde, Portugal.

The conference will feature 2 keynote speakers, 60 presenters, and around 200 participants, including academics, researchers, professionals, and students in the fields of illustration, animation, and digital media.

Keynote Speakers

*Nick Sousanis* – Eisner Award-winning comics author and Associate Professor at San Francisco State University, where he founded and leads an interdisciplinary Comics Studie* program. He is the author of Unflattening, originally his doctoral dissertation, written and drawn entirely in comics form. Published by Harvard University Press in 2015, Unflattening received the American Publishers Association Award for Excellence in Humanities (2016) and the Lynd Ward Prize for Best Graphic Novel in the same year. His comics work has been featured in Nature, The Boston Globe, Columbia Magazine, MIT Technology Review, among others.

*Nadia Ruiz* – A sociologist and researcher specializing in organizational development, she is co-founder and CEO of La Tribu Animation. Her work focuses on building more inclusive and efficient work environments for digital artists, bringing a valuable interdisciplinary perspective to the conference. Her talks are highly anticipated, offering deep insights into visual communication, collaborative practices, and cultural innovation.

In addition to the academic presentations, CONFIA 2025 also includes a symposium and a Pre-CONFIA workshop, exhibitions, and several networking opportunities*, fostering a dynamic, critical, and interdisciplinary environment.
