BIP: Design for Digital Reading

The BIP Design for Digital Reading introduces students to Western reading cultures and different ways of reading that have emerged through and on analog and/or digital mediums. Reading cultures have never been more diverse in these current digital times. With growing technology, reading habits, literacy (at all levels), reading media and assigned times for reading, our ways of reading have changed dramatically over the past 20 years. Readers, and therefore designers too, are barely aware of this. But if designers were aware of this, they could use this knowledge as a creative resource to influence reading on digital (in combination with analogue) media using innovative (invisible) typography. In this BIP, new ways of digital reading (whether for a specific readership or not) are thoroughly studied, questioned, experimentally developed, and elaborated through creative typographic artifacts. In sum, let us make predictions of how typography can creatively unfold in a rapidly changing technological reading environment.
