Micro storage devices, i.e, three-dimensional (3D) printed batteries, will enable completely new products and innovations in a wide range of applications for modern society through the device-customized energy-storage systems with special attention of material design, form factors and easy integration in devices.
The focus of this project is to produce new 3D micro lithium-ion batteries and among other types, through the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) technique based on solid-state ion conductors and optimized additive manufacturing properties for achieving high bulk conductivity and facilitating low interface resistances through the control of printability (rheological properties) and electrochemical performance that are two important parameters which should be simultaneously guaranteed.
The 3D solid-state micro-batteries developed with a focus on design diversity, compact dimensions and scalability will be integrated in hermetic packaging and the improvement of energy and power density will be achieved for application in electronic devices such as smart cards, radio-frequency identification devices (RFID), e-skins, medical devices, and soft robotics or other applications in which they must be exploited incessantly to provide value to the target devices.
Through its miniaturization, the use of new materials for electrodes and polymer electrolytes, the rheological control of the inks adequate for printing techniques and the electron and ion conduction pathways suitable for printed batteries, new batteries with specific energy density, cyclability, low cost and low toxicity will be obtained.
Considering the different approaches for 3D printing technique (FFF) through multi-head additive printing, different types of electrolytes and electrode design will be developed in order to achieve long-term stable different solid-state micro-batteries and later low-cost production.
This project will provide solid-state electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries and other battery types, one of the main needs of the field.
In relation to other types of batteries, special attention will be given to high specific capacity zinc ion batteries, once they are free from safety flaws and must be manufactured under special
